We asked Matt to tell us how he got into playing at Weddings
I loved music from an early age and the piano was always my favourite instrument. I used to play for friends and family and eventually deciding to go professional. Hotels and restaurants were keen to book me to play smooth cocktail music in their foyers and for private dining parties, but there wasn’t enough of that type of work available and so I looked at what other events I could play for. Weddings were my top choice and now they account for around 80% of my business!
The ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast are when I usually get asked to play. I’ve found that brides and grooms love the fact that I’m young and play the sort of music they like. I’m always updating my repertoire and enjoy keeping it up to date. My latest addition is ’Make You Feel My Love’ by Adele, which is being requested nearly everywhereI go.
I’m different to most people’s idea of a pianist; I’ve found that the word ‘pianist’ typically conjures up images of either classical recitals in large halls or late-night cocktail bars. I play classical music and jazz of course, but there’s a whole range of popular music to choose from too: classic rock, pop, soul, disco, indie, motown, Rat Pack, right up to the songs in the Top 40 right now!
I always think: why restrict yourself to a certain musical style when your favourite songs can be turned into piano instrumentals especially for your wedding day?
I’m passionate about detail. I pride myself on providing a very personal service. And I cover the whole musical package, from pre-ceremony music as guests arrive through to the last encore when the bar shutters have come down. Have your own Wedding music planned fro the whole day from start to finish from Matt Carter-Wedding Pianist to Matt Carter as part of a Wedding band.
